In her childhood days in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the show during the 1990s.

Upon learning that Ruffman would be a guest at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, Czajka eagerly purchased a ticket. Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event celebrating the acclaimed Canadian series that aired in over 100 countries, running from 1990 to 1996.

“Road to Avonlea” chronicled the life of young Sarah Stanley, played by the future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives in the early 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a dedicated following and continues to resonate with viewers seeking a retreat into values of kindness, friendship, and community.

The convention spanned three days and featured activities like oyster and wine tasting, panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and visits to filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the event organizer, expressed his hope that the enduring appeal of the show would attract new audiences and sustain interest for years to come. Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, noted the profound connection fans have with the series and characters, sharing her own occasional musings on Aunt Olivia’s hypothetical present-day activities.

Czajka, now sharing the series with her own children, finds joy in reliving the show’s magic with her family, highlighting its rarity in offering wholesome entertainment suitable for all ages. The enduring popularity of “Road to Avonlea” serves as a testament to its timeless appeal and ability to create lasting memories across generations.
