Australia’s temporary captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during the closing phase of the match at the Gabba. England needed to dismiss the Australians for less than 64 runs, but Smith guided his team to victory and sealed the win for the second consecutive Test.

Entering the crease with Australia at 41-2, Smith showcased an impressive display by scoring 23 runs off only nine deliveries. In a dominant performance, he struck two enormous sixes and two fours, putting Archer under pressure and scoring 15 runs off just five balls.

The clash between Smith and Archer escalated during a heated over at the Gabba, as Archer displayed visible frustration after being hit for a boundary by Smith. Unfazed, Smith let his bat do the talking and sent Archer to the deep fine leg and over the boundary for a six, leaving the English bowlers struggling to contain him.

With another six in the following over, Smith concluded the match, propelling Australia to a commanding 2-0 lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.

When questioned about the exchange with Archer on the field, Smith remarked, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you, so it was good fun.”

Archer’s struggle with the pink ball throughout the second Test highlighted England’s bowling challenges, far from their peak performance witnessed on day one in Perth.

Setting a target of 334 for Australia to chase, England’s bowlers failed to capitalize on the batting-friendly pitch, ending day three 43 runs behind at 134-6. Despite late resistance from Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, Australia bowled out England for 241.

Travis Head and Jake Weatherald initiated a quick pursuit, paving the way for Smith to dominate with his aggressive batting approach. Smith’s strategic hitting led to a swift finish, securing the victory for Australia.

Looking ahead, a win in Adelaide is crucial for England to keep their Ashes hopes alive, with the third Test scheduled to commence on December 17.
