Two young men, Jesus Ayala and Jzamir Keys, callously drove a stolen vehicle into retired police officer Andreas Probst while he was riding his bicycle. The disturbing incident, captured on video and shared on social media, led to their arrests. Ayala received a 20-year jail sentence while Keys was sentenced to 18 years for the deliberate act, described by the judge as “callous and heinous.”
Both individuals admitted to the crime of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon in a plea deal with prosecutors. Chief Deputy District Attorney John Giordani emphasized that despite their age, Ayala and Keys were fully aware of the consequences of their actions. He expressed hope that the severe sentencing would serve as a deterrent to other juveniles, underscoring the sanctity of life.
The court in Las Vegas, Nevada, heard that Ayala rammed his stolen vehicle into Probst, causing fatal injuries. The perpetrators, who were juveniles at the time of the incident in August 2023, were apprehended after the video of the crime gained widespread attention on social media platforms, including a share by Elon Musk.
Ayala, reportedly affiliated with the Night Crawlers gang in Las Vegas, expressed remorse for his actions. His attorney, P David Westbrook, stated that Ayala acknowledges the irreversibility of his deeds and does not seek forgiveness. By accepting his life sentence and sparing the victims’ families from further anguish of a trial, Ayala attempted to demonstrate his regret.
Andreas Probst, a former police chief from Bell, California, near Los Angeles, was remembered fondly by his family for his unwavering support and presence in family activities. In a separate development, the Probst family initiated a wrongful-death lawsuit against Hyundai Motor Company in 2023, alleging that Ayala and Keys had utilized a car theft technique demonstrated on social media, known as the “Tik Tok method.”
Recently, Hyundai and Kia settled a lawsuit across multiple states related to similar allegations, agreeing to provide free repairs to enhance the anti-theft technology in millions of vehicles.
