“Tragic Discovery: Sisters’ Bodies Found After 4 Years”

Published on

In a tragic case that shook New Zealand, the bodies of two young sisters, Minu Jo and Yuna Jo, were concealed for four years in a storage unit, tucked away in suitcases in an effort to hide the gruesome truth.

Recently, an unsuspecting family purchased the abandoned locker’s contents through an online auction in 2022. To their horror, instead of finding household items, they stumbled upon the remains of the two children, leading to a shocking revelation that triggered an international investigation, unraveling the disturbing tale of their mother, Hakyung Lee.

The judicial conclusion to this harrowing narrative came as Lee, aged 45, received a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years before parole. The court proceedings exposed the backstory that preceded the 2018 tragedy, depicting a descent from a content family life into a nightmare fueled by loss, illness, and a troubling desire.

Formerly known as Ji Eun Lee, Hakyung resided quietly in Auckland with her spouse, Ian Jo, and their daughters. However, their world crumbled in late 2017 when Ian was diagnosed with a severe illness, leading to his demise and plunging Lee into a deep depression.

The court learned that Lee heavily relied on her husband, and his illness triggered a drastic change in her behavior. Struggling to cope with the impending loss, she spiraled into despair, eventually viewing her children as painful reminders of a past happiness she could no longer bear.

As her mental state deteriorated, Lee’s grief transformed into a chilling desire for a tragic end, not just for herself but for her children as well. Testimonies revealed a disturbing confession she made to a friend about wishing for a fatal incident during a family trip to end their lives together.

In mid-2018, Lee turned these dark thoughts into reality by administering a fatal dose of prescription medication to her daughters, concealing the drugs in juice. Her actions were described in court as premeditated and intentional, as she concealed her children’s bodies in suitcases and stored them in a South Auckland unit while deceiving family members in South Korea about their well-being.

After fleeing to South Korea and assuming a new identity, the children remained missing for years until the storage unit’s contents were auctioned off due to overdue fees in 2022. Lee was apprehended in Ulsan, South Korea, extradited to New Zealand, and brought to trial.

Despite her defense of insanity due to severe depression and a crisis of faith, the jury rejected this defense. The judge acknowledged her mental health struggles but concluded that she was fully aware of her actions.

Justice Venning remarked on the calculated nature of Lee’s steps leading to the children’s deaths and her composed demeanor during and after the crime. Lee received her sentencing with little emotion and will undergo initial treatment in a secure psychiatric facility before being transferred to prison.
