The man, identified as Charles ‘Charlie’ Lawson, was a sharecropper residing in Germanton, North Carolina, USA. He had married Fannie Manring in 1911, and the couple had eight children together, with one child passing away in 1920.

Days before Christmas in 1929, Charles did an unusual thing by taking his family to town for a family portrait, despite their modest means. The gesture raised eyebrows in the town since commissioning such portraits was considered a luxury beyond the reach of a working-class farmer. Shortly after, on Christmas Day, Charles committed a gruesome act of familicide, killing his wife and six children, leaving only his oldest son, Arthur, alive as he had been sent on an errand.

The tragedy unfolded as Marie was preparing a Christmas cake, while Carrie and Maybell were getting ready to visit their aunt. However, Charles ambushed them near the tobacco barn, shooting them with a shotgun and then bludgeoning them.
