Renowned horse trainer Nicky Henderson remains calm and confident leading up to the much-anticipated showdown this weekend between veteran Constitution Hill and rising star The New Lion. Constitution Hill, a former unbeaten champion in the jumping circuit, faced setbacks last season when he fell during key races, including the Champion Hurdle and the Punchestown Champion Hurdle.
Henderson disclosed that Constitution Hill underwent thorough evaluations, likening it to a visit to an equine eye specialist, to ensure the horse’s fitness and readiness for future competitions. Currently, Constitution Hill is listed as the third favorite at 5-1 for the upcoming Champion Hurdle, trailing behind top contenders like Lossiemouth and The New Lion, who are set to compete in the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.
Despite showcasing strong form in recent gallops, Constitution Hill faces a tough challenge against The New Lion, a standout performer at the Cheltenham Festival. The upcoming race also features contenders like Anzadam and Golden Ace, adding to the excitement among fans and bookmakers.
Bookmaker Coral has both Constitution Hill and The New Lion tied as favorites at 11-8, followed by Anzadam at 3-1, Golden Ace at 20-1, and Nemean Lion at 33-1. Henderson expressed confidence in his horse’s preparation, emphasizing the positive feedback from jockey Nico de Boinville following a successful training session.
As the race day approaches, Henderson mentioned logistical considerations, including the possibility of providing a pacemaker for Constitution Hill. While Henderson will be at Newbury overseeing other entries, the horse’s owner, Michael Buckley, will be present at Newcastle to witness the competition unfold.
