A young child in Highgate, Birmingham, endured a severe medical emergency after mistakenly ingesting a harmful drain unblocker, thinking it was milk. The 13-month-old baby, named Sam Anwar, suffered extensive burns to his mouth, tongue, lips, and airways, resulting in a heart attack and a partial loss of his tongue.

Following the incident, Sam spent a significant period in intensive care at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where medical professionals were astonished by the severity of his condition, deeming his survival as extremely rare. At 18 months old, Sam is now back home but continues to face challenges, including the need for a complex surgical procedure to address the internal damage caused by the burns.

To aid in covering the mounting medical expenses, Sam’s father, Nadeem Alshameri, has established a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. The family is also considering seeking specialized medical treatments abroad due to differing opinions among doctors regarding the optimal course of action for Sam’s recovery.

Reflecting on the harrowing incident, Nadeem recounted how Sam inadvertently accessed the caustic soda while his mother was occupied cleaning the bathroom, mistaking it for a bottle of milk. The child’s subsequent health crisis, marked by a heart attack and a temporary loss of consciousness, left the family deeply concerned about his ongoing medical needs and potential risks associated with his impaired ability to swallow.

As Sam continues to require medical attention, including the prospect of additional surgeries, his family remains vigilant and hopeful for his recovery, despite the challenges they face in navigating the complexities of his treatment and ensuring his well-being on a daily basis.
