“Major Illegal Streaming Platform Shutdown in Manchester”

Published on

Homes that were accessing Sky TV content without paying the regular subscription fees may now face disruptions as a major illegal streaming platform has been shut down following a police operation. The platform allegedly provided unauthorized access to premium channels from Sky TV.

The crackdown occurred recently in Manchester, leading to the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of equipment valued at £750,000. The investigation was initiated after Sky reported suspicious activities linked to a large-scale illegal streaming service. The authorities identified suspects believed to be operating an illicit IPTV service that catered to millions of users in the UK. One suspect is accused of making over £3 million from the operation. Sky confirmed that the illegal service caused widespread disruptions nationwide.

While households using the illicit streams are not the main targets of the police, they will find that the content they were viewing is now unavailable on their TVs.

Detective Constable Jordan Day from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) at the City of London Police emphasized the negative impact of illegal IPTV services, labeling them as organized criminal activities that generate substantial illegal profits. Collaboration between law enforcement agencies like PIPCU and industry partners such as Sky is crucial in dismantling these unlawful networks to deter piracy.

Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, commended the actions taken against the pirate operation by the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit. He highlighted the significant efforts put into protecting content investments and disrupting criminal networks behind piracy. Illegal stream viewers were cautioned about the risks involved, citing research indicating that nearly 65% of illegal streamers have encountered security threats like malware. The operation aims to safeguard consumers, their devices, and personal data from such dangers.
