A tragic incident occurred during a competitive eating event when a man, Edward Archbold, passed away after consuming multiple live cockroaches and a python in West Palm Beach, Florida. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation, as his airway became obstructed by the insect parts. The event, known as “Midnight Madness,” took place at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where Archbold collapsed and began vomiting shortly after the contest.

Archbold’s girlfriend, Natasha Proffitt, mentioned that he had previously eaten bugs and intended to gift the female python to a friend. An entomology student, Sarah Bernard, who was present at the competition, explained that it comprised various rounds involving different insects. In the final round, participants were required to consume roaches measuring three to four inches in length.

Despite around 30 competitors taking part, no other incidents were reported. Shop owner Ben Siegel described Archbold as a lively individual who seemed eager to impress and was well-liked by others. All contestants had signed waivers acknowledging the unconventional nature of the event, according to a lawyer representing them.

A medical examiner confirmed that Archbold’s demise was due to choking and aspiration of gastric contents. The examiner elaborated on the physiological aspects of the incident, highlighting the failure of the epiglottis to prevent foreign objects from entering the lungs.

Colleagues and acquaintances paid tribute to Archbold, with Kim Crawford, his co-worker, expressing sorrow over the loss and describing him as a kind and intelligent person. Additionally, psychology professor Lou Manza noted that individuals participating in extreme activities like bug eating often seek novelty and excitement in life, searching for meaning beyond the mundane as they age.
