“UK Homes Moving Towards Internet TV Revolution”

Published on

Millions of households in the UK are currently utilizing the internet for accessing live and on-demand content, with a trend indicating that more Britons may soon follow suit. A recent study, sponsored by Sky, suggests that nearly all residences could be equipped with internet-based TV services by the mid-2030s, leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial distribution methods like Freeview.

Various options already exist for watching television without relying on an aerial, including new streaming products from Sky and the Freely service, which is managed by the same team behind Freeview. Freely is now integrated into numerous new TVs, providing viewers with access to both live and on-demand programming through a broadband connection.

As the number of internet-connected devices in homes continues to rise, a decreasing number of individuals are believed to be tuning into conventional broadcast TV, with an increasing preference for streaming services.

Another challenge faced by Freeview is the potential sharing of its radio frequencies with mobile operators in the UK after 2031. This could further reduce the feasibility of the current over-the-air transmission system.

The expenses associated with maintaining the aging TV distribution system are escalating, prompting active discussions within the UK government regarding future strategies.

Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the alignment of modern TV technology with social inclusion, stating that a complete transition to internet-delivered TV by the 2030s is not only feasible but could also help bridge the digital divide rather than widen it. He advocated for governmental investment in skills and affordable connectivity to assist households requiring support to access online services, highlighting the broader benefits beyond television and potential savings from retiring legacy systems.

While some individuals may welcome the shift towards streaming, not everyone shares the same enthusiasm. A current petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview has garnered 100,000 signatures, with many expressing concerns about their ability to watch TV without it. The petition emphasizes the essential role of Freeview for households, contrasting the straightforward aerial setup with the need for a reliable and costly internet connection for streaming services.

One dissatisfied individual affected by the potential changes is Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, who relies on Free Terrestrial TV for entertainment, news, and educational content. She expressed reservations about transitioning to app-based viewing and encountering technical issues with online streaming services, underscoring her preference for traditional TV accessibility.

Further updates on the future of television services are anticipated to be released soon.
