Google has alerted MacBook users who utilize the Chrome browser to review their settings promptly. The tech giant has announced the discontinuation of Chrome support for older versions of Apple’s macOS on such devices. While Chrome will remain functional on MacBooks and iMacs, users will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially exposing them to security risks.
The upcoming changes will impact users of Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier. Those on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, like macOS Ventura, to ensure continued browser support. Unfortunately, some Mac models, including iMacs predating the 2017 version and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, are incompatible with Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device for safe Chrome usage.
The transition will commence in July of this year. Google has specified that Chrome version 150 is the final one to support macOS 12 (Monterey). Subsequently, starting with Chrome version 151, scheduled for release on July 28, 2026, macOS 13 Ventura or later will be required. Users must have macOS 13 or a newer version to receive future Chrome updates.
While older Chrome versions will function, no further updates will be provided for users on macOS 12. Google advises users on macOS 12 to migrate to a supported version, macOS 13 Ventura or higher, to ensure ongoing access to the latest security features and Chrome enhancements.
