“Tragic Train Accident Claims Lives of Three Teens”

Published on

On a bright October afternoon in 2011, three young individuals tragically lost their lives in a sudden incident. Essa Ricker and Kelsea Webster, both fifteen years old, were accompanied by Kelsea’s thirteen-year-old sister, Savannah Webster, as they paused near the tracks at Covered Bridge Canyon in Utah’s Spanish Fork Canyon to take a selfie. Prior to the unfortunate event, Savannah shared a final social media post on Facebook, expressing excitement about being near a passing train.

Unbeknownst to them, a second train was approaching from the opposite direction on the adjacent track, visible in the background of their last photo. Sheriff’s Sergeant Spencer Cannon later speculated that the noise from the first train might have masked the sound of the second train, catching the girls off guard.

The crew onboard the eastbound Union Pacific freight train, consisting of conductor John Anderson and engineer Michael Anderson, spotted the teens on the tracks and desperately tried to warn them by sounding the horn and applying emergency brakes. However, their efforts were in vain as the girls remained unaware of the imminent danger.

Tragically, the train could not stop in time, resulting in the immediate deaths of Essa and Kelsea, while Savannah initially survived the impact. Despite being rushed to Primary Children’s Medical Center for emergency treatment, Savannah succumbed to her severe injuries three days later after her family made the difficult decision to withdraw life support.

The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting reflections on the risks associated with railway tracks and distractions like social media and cameras. In response, Union Pacific released safety videos in 2016 urging people to avoid taking selfies near railway tracks as part of a broader rail safety campaign.

John Anderson, reflecting on the tragedy, emphasized the importance of staying away from dangerous areas like railway tracks and considering the potential impact on loved ones and emergency responders. He hoped that people would heed the rail safety message and share it with others to prevent similar heartbreaking incidents in the future.
