Google is set to allow millions of Gmail users to change their email addresses to new ones. The update, previously hinted at by Google, is now being rolled out globally. According to a recent post on the Gmail blog page, users can now switch their Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a different gmail.com address.

This change could be well-received, particularly for those who wish to update their username or have had changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized that this feature is gradually becoming available to all users and may not be accessible to everyone immediately.

The new system enables users to have both old and new email addresses functioning simultaneously, ensuring that emails sent to the current Gmail address will automatically be forwarded to the new one. Google assures that all account data, including photos, messages, and emails linked to the original address, will remain unaffected.

To determine if you can change to a new Gmail address without losing your emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if necessary.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Choose Email, then Google Account email.
– Click Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is unavailable, it means the feature is not yet accessible to you.
– Enter your desired new username, ensuring it is unique and not previously used or deleted.
– Click Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions.

Upon completion, your new Gmail address will become your primary email for the account, while the old address will serve as an alternate email.
