A tragic incident unfolded when a man lost his life after becoming trapped inside a large dinosaur statue while attempting to retrieve his mobile phone. The 39-year-old’s body was found inside a papier-mâché stegosaurus in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a suburb of Barcelona, in May 2021, leading to a search by his worried family. Alerted by a father and son who noticed something unusual inside the statue, the police responded to the scene.
Authorities from the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police did not suspect foul play but deemed the man’s death a regrettable accident. A spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra stated that the man was discovered inside the dinosaur statue’s leg after being trapped, clarifying that it was an accidental death with no signs of violence. It was believed that the man had entered the statue headfirst to retrieve his phone and then found himself stuck inside.
Firefighters were called to dismantle the statue and carefully extract the man from its leg. Initial findings suggested that the man had been trapped inside the statue for a couple of days before being discovered. Local media reports indicated that his family had reported him missing shortly before his body was found.
Following the tragic incident, the stegosaurus statue was removed from the area. Originally meant as an advertisement for a nearby cinema, the statue remained in place even after the cinema’s closure. Locals paid tribute by laying flowers at the site where the statue once stood.
While this incident was unfortunate, similar situations have occurred in the past with different outcomes. In Canada, a 26-year-old man had to be rescued by firefighters after getting trapped while climbing the Talus Dome sculpture made of metal balls. Passersby alerted emergency services, who used specialized equipment to free him from the sculpture.
