“White Supremacist Convicted in Gruesome Murder at Montana Campsite”

Published on

An American man connected to white supremacist groups has been convicted of a gruesome murder initially mistaken for a bear attack. Daren Christopher Abbey was found guilty of brutally killing Dustin Kjersem with an axe, wood block, and screwdriver in October 2024 at Dustin’s campsite near Big Sky, Montana. Initially thought to be a bear attack, wildlife agents ruled out animal involvement after finding no traces of wildlife in the area. Abbey’s DNA on a beer can inside Dustin’s tent linked him to the crime scene.

Abbey claimed self-defense, alleging Dustin attacked him upon his arrival at the campsite. However, prosecutors discredited his story due to inconsistencies and the multiple chop wounds inflicted on Dustin. Abbey later confessed to stealing Dustin’s belongings and tampering with evidence post-murder. Following a six-day trial, Abbey was convicted of deliberate homicide and evidence tampering, opting not to testify in his defense.

Although the charges could warrant a death penalty in Montana, prosecutors have decided against seeking capital punishment in this case. Abbey’s defense attorney, Sarah Kottke, mentioned that Abbey will consider appealing the conviction after his sentencing on December 30. Abbey, previously associated with a white supremacist group, had tattoos of a swastika and iron cross, as per Gallatin County inmate information and State Department of Corrections records.

Dustin, a self-employed contractor and father of two, was known for building homes and diversifying his skillset, as shared by his sister.
