Dan Evans Contemplates Departure Over Davis Cup Doubles Snub

Great Britain’s Davis Cup player Dan Evans expressed his frustration and disappointment in 2022 after being overlooked for the doubles event, hinting that he might quit the team due to feeling insulted by the selection decision. Despite being a key member of the 2015 Davis Cup-winning team, Evans was unhappy about not getting the opportunity to compete in the doubles matches. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not have been a deciding factor in his exclusion.

In an interview with iNews, Evans stated that he found it disrespectful not to have been chosen to play doubles in the Davis Cup matches. He argued that his skills in doubles should not be judged solely based on rankings, suggesting that playing style compatibility should be a significant factor in selection.

Following his exclusion from the doubles matches at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, Evans revealed his disappointment and confusion about never being given the chance to compete in that format. He indicated that he might need to reassess his commitment to the team if the situation persisted without yielding favorable results.

In the subsequent year, Evans teamed up with Neal Skupski to secure a doubles victory during a match against Colombia, helping Great Britain secure a spot in the Davis Cup Finals. However, Evans missed the 2023 finale due to an injury.

In 2025, Britain faced elimination from the Davis Cup Finals after losing to Japan in the qualifying round. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led their team to the semi-finals with impressive performances. Despite missing their top players, Italy defeated Austria and advanced to face Belgium in the next round.

Berrettini’s win over Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s victory against Filip Misolic sealed Italy’s place in the semi-finals, showcasing their strength even without key players.
