“Over 1 Million Missing Out on £441 Monthly Benefit”

Published on

As many as 1.1 million individuals may not be taking advantage of the Attendance Allowance, a benefit that can provide up to £441 per month. This information comes from Policy in Practice, which is encouraging individuals to explore potential entitlements to extra assistance. The Attendance Allowance is specifically designed for individuals above state pension age who require additional support or supervision due to a disability or illness.

Eligibility for the Attendance Allowance extends to individuals facing challenges in completing daily tasks, experiencing prolonged time or discomfort in task completion, and requiring assistance for at least six months due to their condition. The weekly amount for Attendance Allowance is £73.90 if assistance or supervision is needed during the day or night, and £110.40 if both day and night support are necessary or if the individual is nearing the end of life.

Payments are distributed every four weeks by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), potentially resulting in £295.60 or £441.60 received per payment period. Importantly, having a caregiver is not a prerequisite for eligibility for the Attendance Allowance. Individuals are encouraged to inform the DWP of any changes in circumstances that might impact the amount they receive.

Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, has no savings limit, is tax-free, and exempt from benefit caps. Furthermore, receiving Attendance Allowance may lead to an increase in other benefits. Individuals already receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) are not eligible for Attendance Allowance.

In Scotland, Attendance Allowance has been replaced with Pension Age Disability Payment. Claiming Attendance Allowance involves submitting a form to the Freepost DWP Attendance Allowance address or contacting the Attendance Allowance helpline for assistance. Applicants must detail how their illness or disability affects their daily life and provide supporting documentation like GP letters, care plans, or prescription lists.

Some applicants may need to undergo an assessment before receiving Attendance Allowance. Terminally ill individuals can expedite their claim process and receive the higher rate immediately.
