University of Alberta ecology professor Mark Boyce, a longstanding advocate for sage grouse conservation, warns that the removal of provincial protections directly endangers the survival of the remaining population, potentially leading to their extinction in Canada.
The sensitive nature of sage grouse to development activities, such as noise, traffic, and predator attraction by human structures, exacerbates the threat to their existence. Boyce criticizes Alberta’s prioritization of industrial development over conservation efforts, expressing concerns about the imminent loss of this critically endangered species.
In response to criticisms, Alberta’s Environment and Protected Areas communications director, Andrew Livingstone, emphasized that the changes aim to simplify regulations in sage grouse habitats, offering clarity and flexibility to industry operators in southeastern Alberta. The province asserts its commitment to a sage grouse recovery program that balances conservation objectives with economic interests, highlighting investments in recovery initiatives like habitat restoration, predator management, and monitoring.
Despite federal protections remaining in place for a portion of Alberta’s sage grouse habitat, the removal of provincial safeguards significantly impacts the species’ conservation efforts. Conservation experts, including Joshua Killeen from the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, warn that without habitat protection, the survival prospects of the sage grouse are severely compromised, potentially leading to their disappearance from Alberta and Canada.
The decision to lift habitat protections was influenced by the helium industry’s advocacy for regulatory changes. Thor Resources, a helium extraction company operating in designated sage grouse habitat, emphasizes adherence to certain wildlife surveys but no longer requires specific measures for sage grouse conservation. The Helium Developers Association of Canada supported the removal of habitat protections, citing the necessity to balance environmental concerns with economic development interests.
