The quarterback, Sara Parker, describes winning a fourth flag football world title for Canada’s senior women as “a dream that hasn’t sunk in,” marking their first victory since 2014 and securing a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Reflecting on the 27-20 triumph over the United States at the International Federation of American Football competition in Düsseldorf, Germany, Parker expressed immense pride and gratitude towards everyone who contributed to their success, emphasizing the hard work put in by herself and her teammates.

During a visit to CBC Sports headquarters in Toronto alongside Guillaume Béland from the Canadian national senior men’s team, Parker highlighted the significance of this achievement for the future of flag football as it prepares for its Olympic debut in Los Angeles. A pivotal figure in the sport at just 26 years old, Parker has been instrumental in establishing flag football programs, including those at Champlain College Saint Lambert and Concordia University.

Parker believes that with the upcoming Olympic recognition, the sport will continue to expand, allowing aspiring athletes to dream of Olympic participation. She emphasized the impact of Canada’s qualification for the 2028 Games on both the men’s and women’s sides, underscoring the tangible realization of this dream.

Having been named the tournament’s most valuable player for her impressive performance with 23 touchdown passes, Parker expressed overwhelming happiness following the championship victory. She acknowledged the profound impact her achievements have had on individuals she encountered, including former acquaintances and aspiring young athletes.

On the men’s side, Guillaume Béland played a crucial role in securing a bronze medal and Olympic berth for Canada with a game-saving interception against Mexico. Béland, a former tackle football player, highlighted the emotional significance of this achievement and the team’s resilience throughout the competition.

As both Parker and Béland look ahead to future training camps and international tournaments, their focus is on developing the sport further and serving as ambassadors for flag football. They aim to set a standard for other countries to follow and inspire the next generation of flag football athletes.
