In the midst of escalating trade tensions between Donald Trump and Canada, an Ottawa city council member is advocating for a street bearing the U.S. president’s name to be renamed. The initiative to rename Trump Avenue in the Central Park neighborhood faced obstacles in 2021 due to divided opinions among residents.
Councillor Riley Brockington emphasized the urgency to rectify what he views as a source of embarrassment, given Trump’s contentious actions towards Canada. Despite the previous setback, Brockington is resolute in pursuing the renaming process post the upcoming election, underscoring the need to act swiftly without further deliberation.
Central Park boasts a collection of streets featuring New York City-inspired names like Staten Way and Grammercy Park. Brockington’s call for change coincided with a discussion on a proposal by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe to aid local businesses impacted by tariffs imposed on Canadian exports by the Trump administration.
While some Trump Avenue inhabitants support the name alteration, citing Trump’s strained relations with Canada as justification, not all residents concur. Some argue that the street’s name aligns with the neighborhood’s New York-themed identity and suggest focusing on more pressing concerns rather than renaming efforts.
