“Migrants in Ceuta Demand Asylum Amid Border Crisis”

Published on

Hundreds of migrants in Ceuta, a North African enclave of Spain, gathered on a popular urban beach to demand asylum on Sunday, rather than being returned to Morocco. Following a mass border crossing two weeks ago where over 72,000 people entered Ceuta, an estimated 5,000 to 8,000 migrants remain in the city. Due to limited resources, most migrants are living in poor conditions on El Trampolin beach or the city’s outskirts, hoping for a chance to travel to mainland Europe.

Ayoub Elarroud from Tetouan, Morocco, expressed the hardships faced by migrants, sleeping near the sea in cold and unsanitary conditions, with police preventing them from entering the city center. The protesters displayed Spanish flags and banners with messages like “We don’t want to go back to Morocco” and “We are also human,” while chanting for a solution to their plight.

In response to the influx of migrants, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that irregular migrants would not be permitted to stay in Ceuta, travel to mainland Spain, or obtain legal status, except in extreme vulnerability cases. The city’s health services are under strain, with reports of diseases such as infectious diarrhea and scabies spreading among the migrant population, along with a rise in violence-related injuries.

Despite the challenges, Health Minister Monica Garcia emphasized that while local health services are under pressure, they have not collapsed. Migrants interviewed cited poor working conditions in Morocco as the driving force behind their journey to Ceuta, with many expressing a desire for better opportunities in Europe. Emmanuel, a Nigerian migrant, embarked on a dangerous journey to provide a better future for his children, willing to take any job offered to him.

The migrants come from various countries, with stories of perilous journeys and struggles for a chance at a better life. The situation in Ceuta remains complex as authorities and humanitarian organizations work to address the needs of the migrants while managing the impact on the local community.
