Christa Pike is currently in an unconscious state, intubated, and reliant on a ventilator for breathing assistance following an unsuccessful attempt to carry out her execution in Tennessee, her legal representatives disclosed on Friday. This marks the initial detailed report on the extent of her injuries sustained during the botched lethal injection.

Medical staff are actively engaged in efforts to save Pike’s life and eliminate the lethal substance pentobarbital from her system, as conveyed by her attorneys in an urgent court filing seeking an order for the preservation of evidence from the failed execution that occurred on Wednesday night.

Despite the administration of two doses of pentobarbital by the state, Pike remains in critical condition, with severe injuries to both arms, as cited by her legal team.

According to Pike’s lawyers, the execution team failed to recognize that the IV lines were improperly placed or that the veins had ruptured, resulting in the unintended entry of pentobarbital into Pike’s body.

This incident sheds light on the medical repercussions of a flawed execution attempt, which Tennessee Governor Bill Lee asserted adhered to the state’s established procedures. It represents the second mishandled execution in the state this year, leading Governor Lee to suspend further state executions for the remainder of 2026 and initiate an independent review of the events.

In light of the challenges faced by the execution team in administering the drug, which were previously highlighted to the state and courts, Pike’s attorneys emphasized issues related to intravenous access.

Pike, aged 50, was convicted of the killing of her 19-year-old classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in 1995 when Pike was 18 years old. She had been slated to be the first female to be executed in Tennessee in over two centuries.
