Ads promoting a documentary scrutinizing Elon Musk, a polarizing billionaire, were initially prohibited on TikTok and X platforms but have now been allowed on YouTube and Meta’s social media networks after a short delay. The trailer for the nearly four-hour documentary titled “Musk” was unveiled on Thursday, in anticipation of its theatrical debut on October 9.
According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday, indie distributor Bleecker Street faced rejection from all four companies when attempting to purchase ad space for the documentary. While YouTube, TikTok, and Meta cited concerns over “political content,” X, owned by Musk, refrained from commenting on the issue.
Following an online outcry, YouTube confirmed on Saturday that the ads for “Musk” were now running on their platform after being temporarily restricted by their system for review. Meta also stated to CBC News on Monday that the ads were mistakenly rejected and have since been reinstated.
TikTok prohibits paid political advertisements, and Meta places restrictions on them in certain regions like the European Union. YouTube permits political ads with transparency disclosures, while X allows them in specific regions such as the U.S.
Elon Musk’s political involvement gained prominence when he supported Donald Trump’s reelection campaign in 2024 and later served in his administration. The documentary delves into allegations that Musk, despite championing free speech, may have misused his Starlink satellites to influence the 2024 election.
Director Alex Gibney expressed relief after YouTube and Meta approved the ads, attributing the change to public pressure. Musk has consistently criticized the documentary, labeling it a “hit piece” and threatening legal action over its coverage of the Starlink satellites.
Critics have lauded the documentary, with Vulture describing it as a “damning” portrayal of Musk’s wealth and power accumulation, while Variety characterized it as a “lacerating portrait” of his influence and ambitions. The film joins a series of projects scrutinizing tech billionaires, including Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film focusing on Mark Zuckerberg.
The documentary has stirred controversy and discussions about Musk’s influence and actions, setting the stage for a broader debate on tech industry figures and their impact on society.
