“Moroccan Authorities Detain 100+ Migrants Near Ceuta Border”

Published on

Moroccan authorities apprehended over 100 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. The heightened security measures were implemented following social media calls for another large-scale migrant crossing.

This incident occurred following a surge of more than 72,000 migrants entering Ceuta two weeks ago, leading to tensions within the European Union and fueling anti-immigration sentiments globally. Tragically, at least 96 individuals lost their lives during the attempt to reach European soil.

Among those detained were 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens near Fnideq, the Moroccan city opposite Ceuta, as reported by a source in Morocco’s Interior Ministry to Reuters. Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants near the border, with Spanish news agency EFE confirming the situation.

In response to the recent events, Spanish authorities have intensified security in Ceuta, with soldiers guarding supermarkets and police maintaining a strong presence in the city. Madrid has bolstered security by installing a maritime barrier and deploying additional police personnel from mainland Spain.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the commitment to restore order and prevent future incidents like the one on July 30. He stated that migrants who entered irregularly would not be permitted to stay in Ceuta or mainland Spain unless under exceptional circumstances of extreme vulnerability. Plans are in place to return those without legal status to Morocco.

Rabat has been vigilant against social media posts inciting mass crossings, with reinforced security near the border and checkpoints to prevent unauthorized movements. Despite these efforts, witnesses observed some migrants from sub-Saharan Africa circumventing security measures by taking alternative routes towards Fnideq.

In light of the risks involved, individuals who successfully crossed into Ceuta advised against further attempts, cautioning against the perils of such journeys. The complex situation underscores the challenges faced by both migrants and authorities in the region.
