Kevin Murison, 35, receives a variety of responses while performing his bagpipes on one of Ottawa’s bustling sidewalks during weekends, mostly positive. Murison, who often busks in full Highland attire near the Château Laurier, shared that he encounters numerous favorable comments praising his playing skills.

Last year, a tourist from Brazil was deeply moved by Murison’s performance, leading her to tears and a warm embrace, even leaving her phone number in hopes of connecting if he ever visits South America. However, not all interactions have been pleasant. Murison recalled an incident where a man demanded he stop playing, then proceeded to throw a drink at him and steal money from his open pipe case.

Yet, the recent Saturday afternoon incident stands out as the most alarming for Murison. While playing at his usual spot, a man approached him under the guise of taking a photo but revealed a knife. Despite the hazy recollection of the event, Murison found himself injured, requiring four stitches in his thumb and a significant gash in his bagpipe bag.

Following the assault, a passerby alerted the authorities, leading to a swift response from the police. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and probation breaches. The attack, deemed unprovoked by Ottawa police, left Murison puzzled about the motive behind the aggression.

Despite the setback, Murison remains resilient, expressing gratitude for the support received from his band and the bagpiping community. While his injury may temporarily pause his performances, Murison is determined to return to playing once he has fully recovered, refusing to let the unfortunate incident silence his passion.
