Edmonton Marathon Apologizes for Course Length Error

Published on

After the Edmonton Marathon concluded, the race director issued an apology, acknowledging an error in accounting for detours that resulted in the race courses being longer than intended. The statement confirmed suspicions raised by many runners.

The Edmonton Marathon race director, Tom Keogh, disclosed on Tuesday that the half-marathon and marathon courses were measured to be 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh explained that an error occurred in calculating the detour-related course adjustments for this year’s event, leading to the extended distance.

Keogh took responsibility for the mistake, expressing sincere apologies to the participants and emphasizing the thorough review conducted by event officials. Elite and amateur runners had previously raised concerns about the race distances, with some stating they believed they had run more than the designated course.

Despite previous assurances of correct course measurement and confirmation on race day, an error was admitted by Keogh. The Edmonton Marathon was a qualifying race for prestigious events like the Boston Marathon, prompting efforts to address the situation in collaboration with Athletics Canada.

One affected participant, Mitch Walz, shared his disappointment after achieving a time that he believed met the Boston Marathon qualifying standard, only to find out later that the course was longer than expected. The emotional toll of the situation was evident as he reflected on his performance and aspirations.

Keogh emphasized the dedication and hard work of all participants, promising a review of certification processes to prevent similar errors in the future. The Boston Athletic Association indicated that adjusted results may not be accepted due to course discrepancies, but athletes meeting the qualifying time despite running extra distance could still be considered for participation.

The incident has sparked discussions within the running community, highlighting the importance of accurate course measurement and the impact of such errors on participants’ achievements and aspirations.
