“Study Investigates Health Impact of Airborne Algae Toxins”

Published on

Living near Lake Erie often means being cautious about blue-green algae blooms. These blooms can cause skin irritation, throat discomfort, and eye redness. Exposure can occur through inhalation, not just physical contact with the water.

Researchers, led by David Kennedy from the University of Toledo, are studying the health effects of airborne algae toxins. The ongoing Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR) tracks individuals in the western Lake Erie basin region.

The study aims to understand the impact of these toxins on people’s health, particularly those who may be more vulnerable. Participants provide samples and are monitored during and outside of peak bloom seasons.

Airborne algae toxins can travel long distances and linger in the air, potentially affecting coastal communities. Symptoms can resemble asthma and may manifest as the “August cough” during bloom periods.

Breathing in toxins from algae can be more harmful than ingesting them. The study seeks to define the long-term effects of airborne cyanobacteria exposure and its implications for public health.

Understanding the movement of airborne algae is crucial due to its potential health risks. The research aims to provide communities with information to mitigate exposure risks and protect public health.
