Israeli airstrikes in a southern Lebanese town resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 12 individuals, including two children, early on Monday, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry. This marked one of the deadliest instances of Israeli bombardment in recent weeks, raising concerns about a potential renewed military campaign in Lebanon despite a ceasefire established in June to halt hostilities between the Israeli military and Hezbollah.
One witness, who claimed to be related to three of the deceased, described how an attack targeted a residential building where children were preparing for school. The Israeli military indicated that the strike was aimed at individuals involved in transferring weapons in the vicinity of the town Kfar Rumman.
The aftermath of the strike revealed a heartbreaking scene, with children’s schoolbooks scattered amidst the rubble of the demolished building. Rescue teams, utilizing heavy machinery, worked tirelessly to recover bodies trapped under the debris.
Among the casualties was eight-year-old Mustafa Farhat, who lost his grandparents and mother in the attack. His father’s fate remained uncertain as rescue efforts continued, while the young boy received medical treatment for his injuries at a local hospital.
Expressing grief and disbelief, a relative of Mustafa, Mona Farhat, questioned the intentions behind the attack and emphasized their determination to remain on their land despite the tragedy. Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed that 11 people, including two children and four women, lost their lives in the assault on the residential structure on Monday.
Additionally, a separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle claimed the life of one medic, with two others sustaining injuries, as reported by the Health Ministry.
The airstrikes in the town occurred without prior online evacuation warnings from the Israeli military. In response to allegations of harm to civilians, the Israeli military stated that precautions had been taken to minimize collateral damage through the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance. An investigation was announced to assess the impact on uninvolved individuals caused by the strikes.
In a related development, the Israeli military disclosed that Hezbollah had launched two explosive drones towards Israeli forces near the Ali al-Taher ridge in southeastern Lebanon. The strategic area, suspected to house an underground military facility belonging to Hezbollah, has been a focal point of recent military activities.
