“Man Convicted in Indigenous Woman’s Death Granted Full Parole”

Published on

The Parole Board of Canada has granted full parole with conditions to Brayden Bushby, the man convicted of manslaughter in the 2017 death of Barbara Kentner in Thunder Bay, Ont. Bushby, who received an eight-year prison sentence five years ago, was deemed suitable for reintegration into society as a law-abiding citizen by the parole board. Kentner, a 34-year-old member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, passed away due to medical complications after being struck by a trailer hitch thrown from a moving vehicle. Bushby, now 27 with two children, had his sentence reduced to seven years and 11 months after time served. The decision to grant full parole to Bushby has sparked outrage from Kentner’s family and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, who view it as a reflection of systemic discrimination in the justice system. Nishnawbe Aski Nation also expressed disappointment in the parole decision, highlighting Bushby’s past high-risk behavior and the continued risks he may pose to society. The parole conditions for Bushby include undergoing treatment programs, abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and refraining from contact with Kentner’s family. The release of Bushby has reignited discussions about the need for societal action to prevent future tragedies and address the ongoing violence against Indigenous women.
