On the same day, Transit Watch received multiple reports from passengers regarding various safety concerns, including harassment, open drug consumption, drug transactions, a fire ignited at a bus stop, and an individual brandishing a flame lighter inside a transit center. Despite the City of Edmonton’s ongoing efforts to enhance public transit safety by increasing the presence of peace and police officers, expanding outreach teams, and investing in cleanliness and security upgrades, text messages sent to the reporting line earlier this year indicate that many passengers still harbor safety apprehensions regarding the system.
Text reports obtained by CBC News, covering a period from mid-February to mid-March, highlighted recurring worries about illicit drug use and smoking in LRT stations, bus stops, and pedestrian walkways. Passengers described encounters with individuals using substances like meth, crack, and fentanyl on transit premises, along with incidents of harassment and verbal abuse linked to drug-influenced behavior.
Moreover, passengers reported witnessing drug transactions, discovering drug-related paraphernalia, observing disruptive behaviors such as public urination and screaming, and encountering safety hazards like shattered glass and unattended fires in transit areas. These reports underscored the persistent safety challenges faced by passengers utilizing the Edmonton transit system.
Katarina Hamilton, a frequent transit user, disclosed her monthly communication with Transit Watch to report incidents like entrances being obstructed and fires being lit, particularly during late evening and early morning hours. Hamilton recounted an unsettling altercation involving weapons at Central Station a year ago, prompting her to seek assistance from Transit Watch and law enforcement to ensure her safety and that of nearby children.
