President Donald Trump has reportedly urged Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, causing a stir among Canadians amidst ongoing trade tensions. According to U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Trump directly contacted Apple regarding the name change. It is anticipated that the alteration to “Lake America” will be implemented soon.

Recently, Trump issued an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” following the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade discussions and the imposition of substantial tariffs by the United States. In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs set to take effect in the coming week.

Despite the directive, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected the renaming, affirming that Lake Ontario, situated between Ontario and New York state as one of the Great Lakes, will remain known as Lake Ontario “now and always.”

Google announced that Google Maps users in the U.S. will see “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario to align with official government sources. However, Canadian users will continue to see Lake Ontario on Google Maps, although some Ontario and Canadian websites briefly displayed “Lake America.”

Apple has yet to comment on whether Trump requested the name change on Apple Maps or if they intend to make the adjustment. As of now, Apple Maps in Canada still identifies the body of water as Lake Ontario.

This move echoes a previous executive order by Trump in 2025 renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, impacting federal documents and geographic services. Some online maps and news outlets have adopted the name “Gulf of America,” while Apple Maps currently denotes the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
