A Food Basics store will replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this fall, leading to the loss of jobs for many employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store was made to better cater to the local customer demands. The closure announcement in May came as a surprise to the Southgate Metro employees, who were informed by management of the financial pressures leading to the change. The Southgate Metro store, which employed 72 people, will not allow workers to transfer to other Metro locations under their collective agreement terms. Instead, employees are encouraged to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store.

The new Food Basics store’s collective agreement mandates the hiring of a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees who apply for positions there. These employees’ seniority will be considered within the Food Basics pay structure. Despite this, some employees, like long-time meat cutter Justin Braganza, expressed concern about their future job prospects due to differences in job roles between the two stores. Additionally, the uncertainty affects employees with work permits whose residency status in Canada depends on employment.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected members, including severance benefits and job opportunities at the new Food Basics store. The union emphasized that these negotiations were well received by the employees. Legal experts highlighted the possibility of unions challenging company decisions leading to job losses, which could result in lengthy legal processes. However, settlements between parties might lead to resolutions with confidentiality clauses to prevent grievances.

Employees like Braganza expressed disillusionment with the lack of recourse in such situations, highlighting the imbalance of power between workers and employers. The impending closure has left employees reflecting on the close relationships built within the workplace, now disrupted by the store’s conversion.
