Fifteen-year-old Finn Holland, a passionate animal lover, sprang into action upon learning that a shark had washed ashore near his residence in Maces Bay, a coastal village in southern New Brunswick. With resolute determination, Finn, accompanied by his family, navigated their side-by-side vehicle down their lengthy driveway to reach the beach at Maces Bay, situated southwest of Saint John.

Upon arriving at the scene, Finn was initially taken aback by the shark’s condition, perceiving it as severely injured or possibly lifeless. However, upon closer observation, he noticed faint movements indicating signs of life. Without hesitation, Finn took hold of the shark’s tail and guided it back into the ocean, witnessing the creature swiftly swim away.

The shark, later identified as a porbeagle shark, measured approximately two meters in length and weighed around 70 kilograms, giving Finn pause before his daring rescue. Reflecting on the experience, Finn expressed astonishment and fascination at the encounter.

Jill Holland, Finn’s mother, recounted her son’s impromptu act of bravery, noting that it aligns with his character to selflessly assist without seeking approval. Despite residing in the area for over a decade, the Holland family had never encountered sharks in the vicinity, making the incident a rare and unexpected occurrence.

According to shark expert Neil Hammerschlag, sightings of porbeagle sharks in their natural habitat are uncommon, particularly without human intervention such as fishing activities. He highlighted the species’ unique ability to regulate body temperature, enabling them to inhabit colder waters in regions like Atlantic Canada and New England.

The atypical presence of the porbeagle shark in shallow waters raised concerns of potential distress, possibly due to illness or previous entanglement with fishing gear. Hammerschlag emphasized the declining population of porbeagle sharks due to overfishing, underscoring the significance of Finn’s rescue effort.

Although the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada designated porbeagle sharks as endangered in the Atlantic Ocean in 2004, the federal government has yet to formalize this classification. Hammerschlag commended Finn’s courageous act and emphasized the importance of returning such endangered species to their natural habitat.

Finn expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from his community following the shark rescue, underscoring the intrinsic satisfaction derived from helping animals, even without their direct acknowledgment.
