Nearly 1,700 athletes are engaging in various sports disciplines during the week-long event, including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. The opening ceremonies at the city’s 6,000-seat hockey arena were filled with vibrant crowds displaying provincial flags and cheering on the participants.
Governor General Louise Arbour, impressed by the level of activity and volunteerism, described the event as an inspiring phenomenon. Nicola Lambrechts, chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, highlighted the athletes’ remarkable performances and the pride they bring to their provinces.
The local community in Medicine Hat has embraced the national event, with around 1,500 volunteers supporting the athletes and their families. The city’s hotels are fully booked, and the event has brought a sense of unity and joy to the community.
Medicine Hat has a history of hosting major sporting events and has invested in modern facilities to support such initiatives. The event’s budget of $3.6 million is funded through government grants, community contributions, and corporate donations, covering transportation, accommodation, meals, and organizing expenses.
The theme of the games, “we all shine together,” reflects the spirit of inclusivity and unity promoted by the Special Olympics movement. CEO Gail Hamamoto emphasized this message during the opening ceremonies, highlighting the importance of collective participation and support in making the event a success.
