A new independent game development studio formed by industry veterans is paving its path in the competitive gaming sector. Studio Reset, headquartered in Edmonton, comprises a team of three individuals who previously collaborated at prominent game companies such as Bioware, known for creating popular titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Kaelin Lavallee, the creative director, departed from Bioware in 2015 and collaborated with various game companies before co-founding Studio Reset alongside Kris Schoneberg and Francis Lacuna earlier this year. Their venture echoes a trend seen among other Canadian indie game creators who have extensive backgrounds in larger gaming studios.
Studio Reset’s inaugural project, “The Eventide,” is a supernatural mystery game set in a Canadian “neon-noir” environment, inspired by iconic shows like “The X-Files” and narrative-driven puzzle games. Players will select from a diverse cast of investigators to solve enigmatic cases, each offering distinct perspectives akin to the dynamic between Mulder and Scully from “The X-Files.”
The realm of indie game development poses inherent risks, especially in an industry inundated with thousands of new releases annually. Nevertheless, smaller teams like Studio Reset are leveraging their creative freedom amidst a landscape where major studios prioritize established franchises over innovative concepts.
According to Paul Fogolin, head of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, the symbiotic relationship between AAA and indie studios contributes to a robust and diverse gaming industry. While major studios offer resources and expertise, independent developers inject entrepreneurship and fresh ideas into the ecosystem.
Transitioning from established studios to indie ventures can be rewarding, as demonstrated by Philippe Morin’s experience co-founding Red Barrels in Montreal after years at Ubisoft and Electronic Arts. Red Barrels’ success with titles like “Outlast” propelled the studio’s growth, emphasizing the appeal of hands-on game development in smaller teams.
As the gaming landscape evolves, indie studios face challenges in marketing and visibility compared to AAA counterparts. However, initiatives like the Canada Media Fund provide crucial early support to fledgling studios, aiding in their journey to establish a presence in the competitive gaming market.
