“Indigenous Leaders Take Action Against Rising Drug Crisis”

Published on

The recent loss of a young community member to a drug overdose left Chief John O’Nabigon of Long Lake #58 First Nation feeling heartbroken and angry. This tragic event marks the third drug-related death of a young person in the community this year. Chief O’Nabigon expressed deep concern about the ongoing drug crisis affecting their community and decided to take action.

In response to what he perceives as a lack of action from various government levels, Chief O’Nabigon has enlisted an Indigenous-operated security company to implement checkpoints within the community. This decision follows Long Lake #58’s declaration of a state of emergency earlier in the year due to drug traffickers supplying vulnerable members in the community.

Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming First Nation, closely connected communities with shared familial ties, have both faced escalating violence and drug-related crimes. Despite multiple emergency declarations, the provincial, federal, and policing partners have not adequately addressed the concerns raised by the communities.

Chief Sheri Taylor of Ginoogaming emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for immediate and coordinated responses to the drug trafficking issues. Both Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming have taken proactive measures to enhance community safety, including hiring security groups to combat illegal drug activities.

The communities have witnessed positive outcomes from these security initiatives, with Chief Taylor noting a noticeable improvement. However, the financial burden of these efforts falls on the First Nations themselves. Chief O’Nabigon stressed the importance of providing professional services within the community to address addiction and ensure individuals do not have to seek treatment elsewhere.

Despite the challenges, community leaders remain committed to holding drug dealers accountable and fostering a supportive environment for community members. The collective strength of the communities, particularly during times of loss, is crucial in addressing the pressing issues at hand.
