Columbia House, Iconic Mail-Order Club, Shuts Down

Published on

Columbia House, a long-standing mail-order club known for offering new members a dozen CDs for a penny, has declared its closure after 71 years in operation. The company, having ceased music sales and Canadian operations back in 2010, recently removed the closure announcement from its website.

The notice of closure, spotted by music enthusiasts over the weekend, indicated that Columbia House would stop accepting new orders after September 15, 2026. Founded in 1955 by Columbia Records as Columbia Record Club, the company aimed to boost music sales in areas lacking access to physical record stores. Over the years, the business expanded to include cassettes, CDs, and eventually DVDs of movies and TV shows.

Initially attracting customers through magazine and newspaper promotions offering multiple music items for a penny, Columbia House’s model proved successful. By 1994, the company had shipped over a billion records and held a 15% share of CD sales. However, as online music options grew, revenue declined, leading to the cessation of music sales in 2010 under the ownership of Direct Brands, with a transition to DVD sales only.

In 2015, the parent company of Columbia House, Filmed Entertainment Inc., filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. The company reported a peak revenue of around $1.4 billion in 1996. The latest closure news coincides with a resurgence in physical media enthusiasm, as highlighted by increased vinyl sales and a growing interest in record stores.

Despite previous bankruptcy proceedings, Columbia House continued operating primarily through DVD sales until the recent closure announcement. Fans of the nostalgic music collection model offered by Columbia House have taken to social media to reminisce about the company’s role in shaping their music libraries and share lighthearted anecdotes, such as joking about unpaid fees from past membership agreements.

Although the closure notice has been removed from the website, CBC News has reached out to Columbia House for further details on its future plans but has not yet received a response.
