Virgin Media users who have not updated their TV set-top boxes recently are urged to do so promptly as the BBC iPlayer app will soon be inaccessible on older devices. Homes utilizing outdated equipment will face a block on accessing popular shows like EastEnders, Casualty, and Murder 24/7 once the update takes effect. Virgin Media has directly notified customers with aging TiVo boxes that their devices will no longer support iPlayer starting from July 23.
The affected devices primarily include older TiVo models launched over a decade ago, while newer V6 and 360 gadgets are unaffected and can continue streaming BBC content seamlessly. Virgin Media has been contacting customers with outdated boxes to facilitate upgrades before the impending deadline.
Users with legacy boxes are advised to respond positively to Virgin’s email notification to avoid losing access to iPlayer, as the streaming service will cease to function post the July cut-off date. This move aligns with the trend of technology companies discontinuing support for older devices due to compatibility and performance issues.
In addition to iPlayer access, upgrading Virgin boxes offers other benefits such as regular updates and bonus channels. Recent updates have introduced new services like British Screen Classics and wedotv movies to enhance the viewing experience on newer devices.
