A group of Ukrainian lawmakers urged Canada’s federal and provincial governments to support the funding of electrical transformers as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, head of Ukraine’s committee on integration into the EU, stated that preparations are being made for a potentially severe winter, with Russia targeting energy, water, and sewage systems. The escalating aerial assaults by Russia over the summer have resulted in significant civilian casualties, with advanced weaponry being deployed to overwhelm air defenses.

During a visit to Ottawa, Ukrainian parliamentarians requested Canada’s assistance in acquiring electronic warfare equipment and air-to-air missiles to combat drones. They also sought financial support through the Energy Community managed by the EU. The delegation highlighted the urgency of addressing the incompatibility between North American and European transformers and welcomed the proactive response from a Canadian province, with plans to engage Ontario in future discussions.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its fourth and a half year, has entered a more perilous phase involving multiple countries supporting Russia. President Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations, emphasizing Russia’s globalizing of the conflict by enlisting foreign fighters. He urged world leaders to impose further economic sanctions to cripple Moscow’s war efforts. Klympush-Tsintsadze expressed concerns over the lack of understanding and urgency in Western nations regarding the threat posed by Russia, emphasizing the need for solidarity and support.

Despite increased defense spending by NATO members, including Canada, there is a perceived lack of political will to address the growing security challenges in Europe. Klympush-Tsintsadze lamented the waning media attention on Ukraine’s plight, calling for sustained international focus on the ongoing crisis.
