Supermarkets in the UK have issued an immediate recall notice following the discovery that a popular breakfast cereal contains an ingredient that could trigger severe allergic reactions.
Food safety authorities have issued a “do not eat” alert for Spoon Cereals’ Cinnamon and Pecan Granola, available at Waitrose, Ocado, and Morrisons. The cereal may contain peanuts and oats, posing a risk to individuals with peanut or gluten allergies.
Spoons Cereals, the manufacturer, has announced a recall of its 400g packets with the batch code M5244 and specific best before dates, including May 22, 2026, and May 26, 2026. Due to mispackaging, some products may contain peanuts and gluten.
Individuals with peanut or gluten allergies, intolerance, or coeliac disease are advised not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund. For further information, customers can contact Spoon Cereals via email at spoon@spooncereals.co.uk.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that the business has issued a point-of-sale notice to inform customers about the recall and provide guidance on what to do if they have purchased the affected product.
Coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition affecting approximately 1 in 100 people, prevents the digestion of gluten, leading to various symptoms from rashes to severe complications like breathing difficulties.
Peanuts are among the 14 allergens that must be disclosed on packaging. In the UK, about 1 in 50 children and 1 in 200 adults have nut allergies, which can result in serious symptoms like swelling, hives, and breathing problems.
Individuals experiencing symptoms after consuming the recalled product are urged to seek immediate medical assistance. Around 2.4 million adults in the UK have confirmed food allergies, where even a tiny amount of an allergen can trigger illness or fatalities.
