A senior citizen from the UK fell overboard from a cruise ship operated by TUI, leading to a significant rescue mission. Spanish authorities are currently scouring the area after the adults-only Marella Explorer 2 issued a Man Overboard alert north of the Canary Islands. The vessel, en route from Madeira to the Canaries, initiated rescue efforts by deploying a helicopter and rescue boats. The ship’s captain implemented emergency procedures, including reviewing footage, deploying marker buoys, and conducting search operations.
Marella Cruises expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming that a passenger was observed entering the water while the ship was en route to La Gomera. The cruise line is providing support to the family and cooperating with local authorities. The occurrence occurred approximately 16 nautical miles from Punta de Teno, as reported by Tenerife daily El Dia.
Spanish coastguards launched a search operation involving maritime and air resources to locate the missing individual. The search, which resumed early in the morning, includes helicopters and patrol boats. A German yacht responded to the distress call, but the passenger remains unaccounted for at this time. The cruise ship, currently stationed in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, features various amenities such as bars, restaurants, an open-air cinema, and a theater. The vessel set sail on a Canarian Flavours tour on November 21, with planned stops in several Canary Islands.
