As older smartphones become outdated, users may face the need to upgrade to newer devices. Major mobile networks in the UK have been gradually phasing out 3G access, which could result in older devices losing connectivity to essential services like WhatsApp.
Virgin Media O2 has recently joined the other top providers in announcing the discontinuation of 3G services in various regions, including Norwich, Telford, and Guildford by July 16, followed by Torquay on August 4. The nationwide shutdown is expected by the year’s end, aligning with O2’s strategy to enhance 4G and 5G connectivity for customers.
Virgin Media O2 emphasized that individuals without 4G or 5G-compatible devices must upgrade to retain access to mobile data services as 3G services will cease in the near future. While Vodafone, Three, and EE have already completed their 3G switch-off, O2 is in the process of catching up.
Most modern smartphones are not affected by this transition, with only older models possibly experiencing connectivity issues. Virgin Media O2 is proactively reaching out to customers without 4G or 5G devices to provide assistance and support.
Introduced in the UK in 2003, 3G technology has been eclipsed by the more efficient and faster 4G and 5G technologies. The difference in speed is significant, with 5G exceeding 100Mbps, making it ideal for activities like mobile streaming.
For more information and support, customers can visit their local O2 store or utilize O2 Recycle to responsibly dispose of old handsets for cash exchange.
