UK inflation holds steady at 3.8% in August

UK inflation maintained a level of 3.8% in August, with a noticeable increase in food prices. This figure matches the inflation rate recorded in July. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) issues monthly inflation data and highlighted a fifth consecutive month of food price acceleration, particularly impacting cheese, fish, and vegetables.

In the year leading up to August, food price inflation reached 5.1%, marking an 18-month high. Additionally, fuel prices rose, while hotel costs decreased less compared to the previous year. However, the rise in prices was partially balanced by airfares, which increased at a slower pace than the previous year. This update on inflation comes just ahead of the Bank of England’s upcoming interest rate decision.

Most economists anticipate that the base rate will remain at 4%, attributing this decision to persistent inflation, a weakened job market, and the impending Autumn Budget. The Bank of England aims for a 2% inflation target and has gradually reduced the base rate to its current 4% level after peaking at 5.25%.

Grant Fitzner, the ONS’s chief economist, noted that annual inflation in August remained stable following various price fluctuations. He highlighted that airfare costs were the primary factor contributing to a decrease in inflation, offset by rising fuel prices and a slower reduction in hotel accommodation costs compared to the previous year. Food inflation continued its upward trend, with slight increases observed across various food categories.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves expressed empathy towards families facing financial challenges and emphasized the government’s commitment to lowering costs and supporting those affected by rising expenses. In contrast, Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride raised concerns about inflation surpassing the 2% target for the 11th consecutive month, attributing this trend to Labour’s economic policies.

Inflation serves as an indicator of changes in the prices of goods and services over time, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) being the primary measure. The ONS calculates inflation based on a representative “basket of goods” and services reflecting household consumption patterns. While a lower inflation rate suggests a slower rate of price increases, it does not imply price stability.

The Bank of England adjusts interest rates to manage inflation levels, influencing borrowing costs for consumers. Higher interest rates can lead to increased borrowing expenses, affecting spending patterns and demand in the economy. The base rate, which currently stands at 4%, has fluctuated over the years in response to inflation trends.

Inflation experienced a surge in 2021, peaking at 11.1% in October 2022, largely driven by escalating energy and food prices. Factors such as increased energy demand post-Covid and geopolitical events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine contributed to these price hikes. While inflation briefly decreased to 1.7% in September 2024, it began to rise again in October of the same year.
