The traditional landline telephone system in the UK is gradually being replaced by modern digital calling services that utilize the internet instead of traditional copper wires. This transition has already been adopted by millions of households, with an additional 137 locations now making the switch from outdated copper cables to digital technology.
The latest update from BT’s Openreach service mandates that new broadband plans or provider switches in these locations will necessitate the use of digital voice services over broadband connections. This initiative, known as the “Stop Sell” alert, is triggered when a significant number of homes near a broadband exchange gain access to ultrafast Full Fibre connectivity.
Once the “Stop Sell” directive is enforced, customers seeking to upgrade or alter their broadband or phone services will be required to opt for a digital service over broadband. However, households that do not yet have Full Fibre connectivity in their vicinity can continue using copper cables until fibre infrastructure is installed in their area.
The shift to Digital Voice technology aims to enhance calling experiences for users by offering features not available on traditional copper landlines, such as Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to alternative phone numbers, including mobile devices. Improved call quality is also expected with Digital Voice, although users will need compatible Digital Home phones to benefit from these enhancements.
BT emphasizes that this transition is essential to meet future communication demands and is a step that cannot be overlooked. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on older and vulnerable individuals without broadband access, as well as potential disruptions in phone services during broadband outages. These issues are being closely monitored by telecom companies and regulatory authorities like Ofcom.
Speaking about the recent changes and the inclusion of 137 new locations in the transition, James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Manager, highlighted the importance of upgrading to future-proofed technologies in line with the evolving digital landscape. The overarching goal is to streamline communication infrastructures by phasing out outdated copper networks in favor of advanced Full Fibre solutions to cater to the digital age.
