A highly contagious strain of avian flu is rapidly spreading across farms in the UK, sparking concerns of a potential shortage of Christmas turkeys for consumers. Retailers are apprehensive as the surge in bird flu cases could deplete supplies, leading to empty shelves in supermarkets and butchers nationwide. Over 30 outbreaks of the virus have been reported on UK farms since the beginning of October. In the event of confirmed bird flu cases in domestic flocks, standard protocol dictates the culling of the entire flock to prevent further spread of the disease. While a turkey scarcity has not been officially announced, industry experts are cautioning that the upcoming Christmas season may present unprecedented challenges.

Rachel Dobson, the managing director of Lynx Purchasing, highlighted the impact of avian flu on the turkey supply chain, noting shortages from key sources in Europe and South America that typically cater to the UK market’s seasonal demand. Dobson emphasized the uncertainty surrounding turkey pricing and availability, advising hospitality operators to prepare for significantly higher prices and potential supply constraints. Operators may experience reduced turkey quantities, smaller bird sizes, or even unavailability of supplies.

Experts have described the virus as highly infectious and well-suited to birds, indicating its formidable nature. Prof Ian Brown, head of avian virology at the Pirbright Institute, characterized the virus as exceptionally adaptable and contagious, labeling it as a “super strain.” The concerns over a challenging festive season were underscored by a recent “supplier issue” that prompted Sainsbury’s to limit its offering of turkey crowns this year. Consequently, the supermarket will not stock its Extra Large British Turkey Crowns, designed to serve 12 people, during the festive period. Customers will have access to small, medium, and large versions accommodating up to 10 individuals.
