UK Defence Chief Warns of Russian Threats

Published on

The UK’s defence chief has issued a stark warning about the increasing threats facing the country, following incidents where lasers were directed at RAF pilots from a Russian spy ship. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the escalating aggression by Vladimir Putin and highlighted the need for public awareness of the heightened level of danger. He disclosed that the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized in response to the presence of the Kremlin’s spy ship, the Yantar, which had entered UK waters recently.

Confirming that lasers were used against British aircraft, Healey condemned the action as extremely hazardous and sent a direct message to the Russian leader, stating, “We see you.” He emphasized that military engagement with the vessel would occur if it altered its course, signaling a significant rise in tensions between the UK and Moscow. The Yantar, capable of surveillance during peacetime and sabotage in conflicts, was located near Scottish waters on Wednesday.

A source from the Ministry of Defence revealed that the Yantar had intruded into UK waters between November 5 and 11. Healey underscored the need for recognition of Putin’s heightened aggression not only in Ukraine but also in a broader context. He stressed the necessity for a new approach to defense in response to the evolving threats and highlighted the government’s substantial commitment to a significant increase in defense spending.

The Defence Secretary referenced a previous incident where a Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine had deterred the Yantar near undersea cables. He emphasized that the recent incursion of the spy ship served as a reminder of the growing Russian threat and reiterated the UK’s vigilance and preparedness to respond effectively to any provocation. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper echoed concerns about Moscow’s escalating actions, particularly following setbacks in Ukraine, and emphasized the need for a resolute response.

The article also mentioned accusations by the Polish government regarding a train explosion near Mika, attributing the incident to Russian involvement and labeling it as an act of state terrorism. The closure of the final Russian consulate in the country was confirmed in response to the incident. Cooper expressed solidarity with Poland and condemned the sabotage of a crucial railway line delivering support to Ukraine as unacceptable.

Further developments included the Dutch navy escorting the Yantar out of the Netherlands’ North Sea territory, while the UK government’s response to Russia over the spy ship remained undisclosed. Political figures highlighted the importance of defending national security, with upcoming discussions in the Budget emphasizing the commitment to bolstering defense capabilities. The Defence Secretary emphasized the Labour Party’s dedication to strengthening national defense and criticized other parties for their perceived inadequacies in this regard.
