US President Donald Trump has filed a $5 billion lawsuit against the BBC, alleging that they manipulated his statements. The legal action stems from a recent Panorama episode aired prior to the 2024 US election, showcasing Trump’s remarks to supporters before the 2021 Capitol riots. The episode seemed to depict Trump saying, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you, and we fight. We fight like hell.”
However, these statements were pieced together from different parts of Trump’s speech, separated by nearly an hour. The BBC issued an apology for the editing error but clarified that Trump’s claim lacked a legal basis. Amid the ongoing dispute, the Mirror examines the BBC’s highest-paid personalities.
In July, the BBC disclosed the earnings of its top stars in its annual report, revealing notable changes among the highest earners. Former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, who recently departed the network, retained the top spot with a salary of £1.35 million. Following Lineker was former Radio 2 breakfast presenter Zoe Ball, earning £515,000 despite being replaced on the Breakfast Show.
Alan Shearer, the Match of the Day host, emerged as the third highest-paid BBC figure, securing a higher income after covering the Euros the previous year. Additionally, radio host Nick Robinson received a raise, and Vernon Kay entered the top 10 earners for the first time. BBC North America Editor Justin Webb also made the top 10 list with an impressive salary of £365,000.
Last year, Vernon Kay debuted on the list after joining BBC Radio 2, commanding a salary of £320,000. Disgraced BBC News host Huw Edwards maintained his third-place position, earning between £475,000 and £479,999, up from the previous year. Edwards departed the BBC amid allegations and speculation about his personal life.
