Saturday’s brutal stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire has been confirmed by the Home Secretary as not linked to terrorism. Shabana Mahmood provided an update stating that two British-born individuals were arrested in Huntingdon following the attack. She commended the rapid response of emergency services and acknowledged the exceptional courage displayed by both train staff and passengers on the LNER train.
Authorities reported that a 32-year-old British male and a 35-year-old man of Caribbean descent, also a British national, are currently in custody. The disturbing event resulted in eleven individuals being injured, with nine sustaining life-threatening wounds on a train bound for London. Thankfully, four of the injured have already been released from the hospital. The stabbings occurred shortly after the train’s stop in Peterborough.
In a tweet, Ms. Mahmood expressed her thoughts and gratitude towards the victims, their families, and the responding agencies, including the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East of England Ambulance Service. She highlighted the professionalism and swift actions that helped save lives and emphasized the ongoing investigation into the incident.
British Transport Police Superintendent John Loveless described the incident as “shocking” and refrained from speculating on the motive behind the stabbings. He confirmed that the first arrest was made promptly after the attack was reported and updated the press on the treatment of the injured individuals. While counter-terrorism support was initially involved, there is currently no evidence to suggest a terrorist connection.
The disturbing attack unfolded on a train departing from Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire at 7:42 pm. Police reportedly used a Taser to subdue a man wielding a large knife. Two arrests have been made in connection with the incident, which occurred on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross service on Saturday evening.
