“Train Incident Shocks East Coast Mainline, Football Fans”

Published on

Last night, a sudden shift in priorities occurred on the East Coast Mainline as a replacement bus service took precedence over football. The LNER train incident served as a stark reminder of life’s fragility.

Amidst the shock of the train incident on what seemed like an ordinary Saturday night, our thoughts are with those significantly impacted, potentially facing life-altering injuries. Planned disruptions led to Newcastle United fans needing a replacement bus from Darlington to Doncaster, resulting in lengthy queues as travelers and supporters intermingled along the journey. The evening began routinely at Central Station, bustling with North-East residents heading south or enjoying an autumn night out.

Newcastle fans at the station watched England’s rugby match or prepared for the journey with coffee and snacks. However, the unfolding events took everyone by surprise. While I was fortunate to catch a later train to London, the ill-fated LNER service that came to an emergency halt at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, left many shaken.

Upon reaching Newark, we learned of the distressing incident causing a delay. By 11 pm, passengers were informed that the service would return to Doncaster or they could make alternative arrangements, with LNER offering refunds. The severity of the situation became clearer at Peterborough, revealing the extent of the tragedy.

Emergency services at Peterborough ensured safety as LNER staff efficiently organized accommodations or transport for passengers. The shock was evident as travelers disembarked, including families, children, and the elderly, all affected by the unexpected turn of events. Despite varying destinations, the professionalism and compassion of LNER staff were commendable.

Arriving at my London hotel past 3 am, the events of the night lingered, with some still queuing at Peterborough station. Our thoughts remain with those most affected and witnesses to the harrowing scenes. The train involved remains in Huntingdon, with the affected carriage now a crime scene.
