A 19-year-old individual lost his life in an unfortunate incident at a zoo in Parque Arruda Câmara, also known as Bica, in João Pessoa, Brazil, after unlawfully entering the big cat enclosure by climbing over a 20-foot fence. The victim, identified as Gerson de Melo Machado, breached the enclosure by scaling a tree, leading to a lioness attacking him upon landing. The distressing event triggered an immediate emergency response, involving military police.

Reports indicate that the victim had a history of mental health issues and schizophrenia, having been institutionalized during childhood and having spent time in prison.

Following the tragic occurrence, the zoo was temporarily shut down, with the Institute of Forensic Science of Paraíba (IPC) launching an investigation into the incident. Zoo officials conveyed their condolences to the victim’s family, expressing deep regret over the incident.

A spokesperson for the zoo stated, “This is a profoundly sorrowful incident for all involved, and we extend our sympathies and condolences to the unidentified man’s family and friends. As soon as the incident was reported, the park was promptly closed in adherence to safety protocols.”

The statement further mentioned, “Bica will remain inaccessible to visitors until the investigation and formal procedures are concluded, emphasizing transparency and a commitment to the safety of our guests, staff, and animals.”

Additionally, the spokesperson emphasized the zoo’s adherence to stringent technical standards and safety protocols, affirming full cooperation with relevant authorities to ascertain the facts. The Arruda Câmara Park conveyed solidarity with the deceased’s family, expressing deep regret over the loss and offering strength during the challenging period.

In an update, the zoo confirmed that the lioness involved, named Leona, would not be euthanized and was under close observation due to experiencing significant stress following the incident. The zoo’s team, including veterinarians, handlers, and technicians, are dedicated to ensuring Leona’s well-being, providing necessary care and monitoring to help her recover emotionally and resume her routine safely.
